George Hamilton WALLACE (SN 1117/77972) was a 34 year old shearer from Snake Valley when he enlisted on March 3rd 1915. He embarked from Sydney on August 20th aboard the Shropshire and served the final month of the Gallipoli campaign with the 5th Light Horse Regiment. After the Gallipoli evacuation he was based in Egypt. In November of 1916 he was attached for a time to the Royal Flying Corps then in mid-1917 he undertook a railway construction course. Towards the end of 1917 illness forced him to hospital and rendered him unfit for active service. He returned to Australia on the Tofua, disembarked on January 30th 1918 and was discharged as ‘medically unfit – disordered action of the heart and rheumatism’. He re-enlisted in June 1918, joining the Medical Corps Sea Transport Section, but once again illness caused him to be discharged at his own request. He died on April 2nd 1941 at the age of 62.
